Oregon Department of Human Services Director's Message
July 2, 2009 DHS Director's messages on the web
To: All DHS employees
From: Bruce Goldberg, M.D., director
Happy Fourth of July
"Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity -- not a threat."
~Albert Einstein
Oregonians -- even transplants like myself -- know that summer doesn't really start until the Fourth of July. That feels especially true this year after the Legislature finished its work this week and with warm weather on the way.

So as we approach Independence Day weekend I'm going to keep this message short.

As we celebrate this truly unique American holiday with our friends and family, we keep with us the lessons learned from history. That is, be tenacious, be creative and do not fear standing up for what you believe in. These are great lessons not only for our country but for our agency.

I know we also remember that many Americans celebrate Independence Day far from home -- in Iraq and Afghanistan and other places -- and we remember them this weekend, too.

I wish you and yours a safe holiday.
