Building a healthy tomorrow

“The decisions we make today will determine the Oregon that our children inherit from us. Together, we can and will make their future bright.” Governor John Kitzhaber

This week, we saw firsthand how Oregon is building a foundation of good health for everyone by transforming the health care system.

On Monday, Governor Kitzhaber released his budget for the 2015-2017 legislative session, which reflects all the work that we do to improve the lifelong health of Oregonians. The Governor’s budget for the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) shows in stark relief how Oregon’s approach toward better health and better care brings lower costs. The savings from reduced health care spending can now be invested in education and early learning. You can learn more about the budget on our 2015-2017 OHA budget web page.

And on Wednesday and Thursday, more than 1,100 people gathered for the two-day 2014 Coordinated Care Model Summit sponsored by OHA’s Transformation Center. While the budget reflected the financial savings, the people gathered showed how this work is happening on the ground and how it affects Oregonians. Representatives from CCOs, local public health departments, private health systems, community partners, health advocates, and government agencies gathered to share ideas and lessons learned over the past year and best practices for continuing innovation in the health system. CCOs presented about innovations happening in their communities including integrating behavioral and physical health, primary care, and more. And Governor Kitzhaber spoke about the importance of health system transformation, and encouraged us all to look toward the future as we continue to innovate.

This truly was a week when we saw health system transformation in action.
