Giving thanks to those who serve

Our strength is not just in the size of our defense budget, but in the size of our hearts, in the size of our gratitude for their sacrifice. And that's not just measured in words or gestures. ~Jennifer Granholm, former Michigan governor

Our offices will be closed Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day as we honor the millions of Americans, including many among our employees, their families and our clients, who have served our country in war and peace.

One way we can say thank you is through programs that support veterans and their families. The Oregon Health Plan and Healthy Kids offer no-cost health insurance coverage for individuals and families in transition. The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs and its county partners help Oregon veterans and their families access health care, education and other benefits, and assist them in retrieving service records and obtaining earned military awards. And the Returning Veterans Project offers free counseling and other health services for veterans and their families in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

There are also many opportunities to volunteer your time for veterans. Contact the Salem or Portland VA Medical Centers, or one of the many programs and agencies serving homeless veterans in our state.

Another way to honor our veterans’ service is by attending a Veterans Day event. In cities and towns across Oregon, families, neighbors and communities will come together Tuesday in solemn remembrance and in celebration.

To our own employees who are veterans and who work every day to improve the health of all Oregonians, please accept our heartfelt gratitude for your service.
