Taking care of ourselves

"Taking care of yourself is the most powerful way to begin to take care of others."
~Bryant McGill (American author)

The Oregon Health Authority and our many partners around the state help a lot of people. In our pursuit of our vision of a healthy Oregon, we help make sure people have access to health care, we help ensure Oregonians have clean water to drink and safe food to eat, and we provide health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of people. The work we do to take care of others is incredibly important, but it’s also important to take care of ourselves.

That’s why, in light of recent events, I want to make sure we know how to take care of ourselves, our colleagues and our loved ones. If you or someone you know is in crisis, here are some things you need to know.

The number for the Suicide Lifeline and Mental Health Crisis Line is 800-273-8255 or 800-SUICIDE. There are more crisis resources on the Addictions and Mental Health website.

For state employees, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free and confidential service that can help you and your eligible family members with any personal concern, large or small. Employees and family members can call 800-433-2320, or text 503-980-1777, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can also use the website’s “Instant Chat with EAP” feature to instantly connect with an EAP counselor.

Please, ask for help if you need it. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you know someone else who needs help, and don’t forget to take care of yourself, too.
