Looking for the helpers

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world."
~Fred Rogers

This week, Oregon experienced the tragic, violent loss of two young lives in Troutdale. As we search to understand what led up to this horrible event, it’s comforting to see the helpers who are coming forward to support the students, teachers and parents of Reynolds High School.

After a school shooting, parents often are challenged to find the right words to help their children feel safe in a world where such things happen. There are resources related to school crisis and bereavement on our website, including help lines and fact sheets in English and Spanish. For young adults, Youth M.O.V.E offers a safe place to talk about what they are experiencing.

We grieve with the families, friends and communities of the children who have been lost. Take care this weekend, and hold your loved ones close.
